Miami : Sports & Outdoors : Orange Bowl Committee
The Orange Bowl Committee was created in 1935. Its mission: To bring tourism to South Florida through an annual football game. Since that time, the non-profit 310-member, all-volunteer organization has expanded its reach beyond the city to become a foundation of the South Florida community. In 1982, the Committee adopted a new charter to expand its active membership beyond Miami-Dade County into the rest of the state. This expansion was strengthened in 1990 by the South Florida Sports Coalition, which brought together neighboring counties to explore new avenues of bringing the excitement of sport to South Florida. With the experience of bidding on several national events, the communities pulled together to land 11 first and second round soccer matches of the 1996 Olympic Games.
